From their status it states:
2013 Inaugural Naperville Race Registration Fees:
•$115 Naperville Half Marathon
•$150 Naperville Marathon
Each entry fee includes:
* a gender specific top brand half zip running long sleeve ($65 value) (I dig this part)
* your race photo package. A free download of a series of high quality digital race 8”x 10” photographs of you running in the Naperville race ($50 value) ( really??? what if they suck ass? )
* your race bib personalized with your first name (not important imo! )
* a commemorative finishers medal (better be nice!)
* a race packet filled with free products and valuable coupons (if it's fliers for other races than hahano)
* your online finisher’s certificate (I have never printed one out)
* free pace teams led by experienced pacers
* free parking at packet pickup and race day (vs Chicago where you pay $10 -$25 )
If you thought my eyes bugged out at the prices you surely would be correct. Even a WTF are they thinking? Heck if you think I sound pissy about this go read the comments here.
Let's put it in perspective.
The Chicago Marathon this year will be listed at $175. I was aghast at that price. They have a horrible swag bag and a flimsy shirt that is the same color that Bank of America has for the past two years used as the same color for the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle race that is run in the spring. But it's Chicago. They shut down a good portion of downtown for this and go through out the whole city with wonderful support and it's being going on for decades.
Naperville is about 36 mins west of Chicago. It does have a nice little downtown area but I really doubt the majority of this race will be in downtown Naperville OR along the riverfront. Which this is another thing people are upset about. The course map is not issued yet. Which a general idea would be nice because nobody wants to do 3 loops on a forest preserve esp for $150. Know what I mean? Some commentators on FB are wondering if the town is bending them over on the price of doing this race. If they are than shame on Naperville. You already sorta of have a reputation for being somewhat snobby people so this reaming of the runners doesn't really help you.
This is an inaugural event going through a suburban neighborhood. It was appealing because it was close to home and not a big field (capping at 4K they said on FB).
The race is scheduled for November 10th. Registration opens on the 28th of January. I really had thought the price for this would be like most half marathons in our area would be about $65 ish not anything more than $80. What's worse about this? It will most likely sell out.
Unless they take the option off of the $50 value of possible crappy race photos I doubt I will sign up. I will spend my $75 and sign up for the Fox Valley Marathon/Half.
I know a lot of work goes into putting together a race but you have to admit this is a costly race. I read over 100 comments on their status by the time I put this post together and maybe 3 were like oh ok that sounds ok.

The race director responded on Facebook with a few things I still find very, very questionable and IMO a bunch of bullshit.
The idea of the pictures was to be a value to both the experienced runner as well as the first timer of this Inaugural Event. The photo's are going to be awesome. We felt it was a nice touch to include this into the event. I know there are many of us that when we see ourselves grimacing at 10 miles or 23 miles just wish the photographer wasn't around...but at the same time when it is all said and done those are memories as runners we cherish. I know that means nothing again to many of you but remember what your Mom told you "it isn't always about you"... Ok it is...but work with us. :-)
.....
Our efforts to have this race finish at North Central College and have showers available after the race is huge, and something we see as valuable as runners for runners.
To keep you warm before the race even starts is something we have thought of as well. Not sure how many races you have run in November early in the morning, but warm is good. :-)
Our race village will be outstanding for post race...and downtown Naperville is opening its arms to all of the runners as well.

That is the biggest bunch of crap about the photos. Really? They are going to be awesome? HOW THE HELL DO THEY KNOW THAT? Are there unicorns prancing around in Naperville I don't know about?? They call themselves experienced runners. I'm baffled that over 250 will tell them that the photos should be an option and they STILL think we should be forced to pay for them in the package.
Then the showers. WTF. Nobody gets done with a race and goes where's the nearest shower with strangers?? Esp if it's a local race and you are only 30 mins away from home.
Opinions? Not signing up for this now? Price doesn't matter it's an inaugural event?

Those seem like city prices. For an inaugural, suburban race. I was really surprised!
ReplyDeleteLiving in the dc area, these are our prices. its so sad, I used to do a race a month, but everyone has raised prides...I can't afford it now.
ReplyDeleteIt's horrible!!
DeleteDoes that include pictures that you may or may not want? There are over 200 comments on their status and a lot of them say get rid of the picture part. I only have ever bought 1 photo from a race. And it wasn't even a half or full!
I just want to know when did gouging of runners become ok? Is it when it became the norm for fancy gadgets, technical shirts and outfits? I've only been doing this 3 years so my perspective is off as well. If you've been doing this for 20 + years I would imagine you would alot more pissier than I am about this!
Holy crap, that is expensive. And the inaugural race should be cheaper - what if it sucks? The racers are guinea pigs for this one. But I've noticed a lot of races are getting really, ridiculously expensive. Hot Chocolate 5Ks are over $50, as are Color Runs. FOR WHAT??? Sorry, but $25/30 is my max for a 5K, and it still better be going to charity.
ReplyDeleteI think its outrageous! They have no reputation to stand on. Chicago is a world major and sells out quickly. This? This is a joke! Off the list it goes.
ReplyDelete$100 for a half? That's what I grudgingly paid for RNR Arizona, since I didn't get my act together and sign up early enough. I'm still kicking myself...but who pays that on opening registration day? Cray cray.
ReplyDeleteThat's sorta high for a suburban race but honestly it sounds like good stuff. And I LOVED when my name was on my bib. Random people cheering me on by name = awesome!!
ReplyDeleteNaperville in NOT Chicago. Chicago is a world major and will always demand a premium. The races directors are nuts. The only thing that's extra from others is the race pics being included and that's not worth more than double the cost. Comparison - I signed up for the Detroit Half Marathon this year on the first day at the lowest cost - $50. An incredible value. Worth the trip to come visit our city.
ReplyDeleteThe race director responded on FB and I updated with two of things that still are pissing people off. They call themselves experienced runners. I don't know how.
DeleteI've been strongly considering the Detroit Marathon for awhile, and now that I've given up on Naperville, 2013 might be the year I do it.
DeleteI just passed on Portland Marathon because the early bird price is $125. It's a fall marathon. BUT Seattle Marathon is $85 plus a $10 off discount. They will get my money in Seattle (I've run the half twice and it is a well organized event with quality medals). Why is it more to shut down Portland? Seems like it would be the opposite imo.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that these prices are BS, and so is their response so far. I agree, the photo thing is so stupid. I have bought a grand total of 3 race photos in my life (of the 35-ish races I've ever done). One photo was from a race where my husband and I finished within a second of each other (and I beat him). The other two were from Chicago last year - my very first marathon. What do I need more photos of myself running for??? I don't. So that's a huge waste. And frankly I am getting sick and tired of race directors touting the SWAG as a benefit. As someone else on their FB page pointed out, good swag does not a good race make. We want a quality RACE. If I wanted a nice $65 running top, I'd go buy one. I don't do races for the shirts. I do them for the RACE.
ReplyDeleteBut then again ... this is Naperville. So maybe they are truly catering to the type of person who lives in Naperville. Or at least the stereotype. Which is a shame. I was really hoping this would be a great local alternative to the increasing cost of the Chicago Marathon. Oh well. My best friend was considering the half and I was considering the full, but now we are considering doing an out-of-state full & half combo race, like the Detroit Marathon.
I wouldn't do a race that expensive even if it was in my hometown. And I would not want my photos!! I do enjoy the small town races I've done that issue free pictures but I've still never printed any of them so what's the point? I paid $90 to run Marine Corps Marathon in 2011 and that was the most I've ever paid for a race. It made sense since it is in DC and shuts down a lot of the city. After some research, it was still a great price for a marathon so I was ok with paying that amount.
ReplyDeleteWay too much money to spend on a race - if they included a one night hotel stay then maybe LOL. I don't have a problem paying $50-$80 for a race - heck the shirts NEVER fit me anyway. They don't make them to fit normal sized/plus sized runners. I have a pile of them I can't wear. I would pay extra for a destination race - say....MAUI MARATHON. I dream of someday doing that marathon. I have been to the island several times and it would be so worth it to run a race there.
ReplyDeleteFor less than half the cost you can run the Naperville Trails Half Marathon. Maybe liability costs are higher in the actual city of Naperville?
ReplyDeleteWell I think that race is really all forest preserve property not Naperville.
DeleteIs it a well run race? I'm curious now but it's an All Community Event and they were my first half that was horrible.
As a trail runner, I have a hard time reading this and seeing the costs. For a pinch more than the cost of the Naperville Full, one could run Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 miler. Yes, 100 miles for less than $200 with amazing aid stations, a fab RD, and all of the supportive volunteers you could ever want.
ReplyDeleteWith that being said, you could run an entire series of phenomenal road races in our area (Utah- a bit north of Salt Lake) for less than the cost of the Naperville half or full. The Peach Days 10k in Brigham City cost $20 (early fee) with a sweet tech shirt!
The Layton Half was $45 last year, and for every volunteer you brought (up to 3 over the age of 14 yrs), you earned a $10 discount. For some that means the Half cost $15 with great support on the course and more!
too much...I would pass also...
ReplyDeletethey need to prove their event is worth that kind of money first!
I just passed on 2 races here because of the prices..the worst was Disneyland...$175 for a half!!....greedy Mouse!
