After the birth of my youngest daughter in 2008 I had a situation of being at home with two little girls and not wanting to join a gym. My husbands work schedule at the time was insane. Going into a gym with my little one's would be hard because the days my oldest didn't have her little parents day out program she had speech and occupational therapy at our house. So I literally was home bound majority of the time.
So what did I do to jump start my weight loss at the start of the winter? I walked. At home. With no treadmill. Say what? Oh I know it seems silly but it's not really. Why? Because I found Leslie.
Leslie Sansone to be exact has a great system of DVD's that encourages people to get up off the couch and walk in their very own living room! It was that simple. You could start with mile 1 only or then go up and before you know it you are doing the whole DVD. It's a very good workout because you aren't just standing in one place. You are actually moving up and back, left to right. She has you working your arms as well with the stretch bands. It really is just that easy.
It is in my opinion a great way to get moving especially if you never thought you could do that. It's great for those who don't want to walk into a gym just yet. For those who can't afford a treadmill. For those who don't know where to start this is a good solid place.
So when I started to walk at home it encouraged me to want more. That's
when I started with the idea that I would run a race. In
a few months I was signed up for the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle. So in a matter of 5 months or so I went from walking in my house to run/walking a 8K race.
There are only a few things I think you need to start your journey to getting active.
1) Water. It is your best friend. Well not really but it's better than regular or diet pop. There is to much sugar in those products OR stuff that says it's ok but really isn't.
2) Schedule your workout. If you don't make time for yourself you aren't going to be useful to anyone else. YOU are important. If you are the primary caretaker in your family sometimes you might feel like you get the shaft on the importance ladder.
3) Tools. You have to have the tools to do the job. Workout DVD's for at home workouts are great ways to start.
So today what I am going to do is to give away my version of a Get Active Starter Kit!
